FAQ FOR PARENTS
Q: What is the Columbus Magnet School (CMS) Young Astronauts (YA) program?
A: CMS YA is an extra-curricular program that uses a space exploration theme to expose young minds to Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) disciplines. The five-year program builds a foundation of leadership, teamwork and mutual respect to enable our children to become future leaders and innovators. CMS YA begins in 1st grade and builds towards a simulated space mission in 5th grade.
Q: Who is eligible to participate in the CMS YA program?
A: All CMS students are invited to join the YA program in 1st or 2nd grade, and to continue in the program through 5th grade (Mission year). After 2nd grade, students may not join the program unless they are new to the school, in which case they can join the program the same year they enter.
Q: Is the program open to non-CMS students in the Norwalk area?
A: No. YA is a part of the CMS PTA and run by CMS parent volunteers, so participation is limited to CMS students only.
Q: My student started the YA program at CMS but is leaving to attend another school. Can s/he still participate in YA?
A: Unfortunately, no. In the fall of 2018, the YA Steering Committee made the decision that effective the 2018/19 school year, leaving the school also means leaving the YA program. A one-time exception was made for any 2018 Mission year students impacted by the new policy.
Q: Can YA alumni come back to assist with the program?
A: Yes! We love having YA alumni return to assist the teachers and share their experiences with the students. Please note that internships are available to YA alumni in 8th grade or higher, to allow some time to pass between completing Mission and returning to help out. It is important that interns are seen as persons of authority by the students, and that they have reached the level of maturity, commitment and responsibility required to assist in a classroom. To apply for an internship or get more information, please email CMSYAgovernance@gmail.com.
Q: Who can I reach out to for more information?
A: Please email the YA Steering Committee at CMSYAgovernance@gmail.com
