October 21st 2016- Gravity and Newton’s Law

This week in YA the children dove into the world of Isaac Newton. After describing Newton’s Law and how it pertains to movement, C in C showed us a fun video of himself during Space Camp in a plane simulating zero gravity. There was also a long discussion about the Montgolfier brothers in France, who invented the hot air balloon, which is the first successful human-carrying flight technology. Then the kids split up into groups to test their own flight technology. They were given a paper bag containing a long balloon, tape, a straw, scissors and some string. They had to work together to to find a way to create flight over a distance in a controlled manner. While they worked they did a great job listening and incorporating everyone’s thoughts. These YA astronauts had some amazingly creative ideas!
